Abstract

Nepal is a developing country where huge percentage of national budget is allocated for its infrastructure development. For reliable and durable structures, demand of good quality of aggregates is very high in construction industry of Nepal. This study focuses on the comparison of the physical and mechanical properties of river bed aggregate available in Rupandehi District, Nepal from four different rivers i.e Banganga River, Danav River, Tinau River and Rohini Khola along with its effects on the strength of concrete. For this research sample of the aggregate were collected from above mentioned sources. Lab tests were conducted to determine the physical properties and mechanical properties of the aggregates. Also, concrete cubes were prepared for M20 grade using these aggregate and compressive strength tests was conducted using UTM machine. From the test the range of specific gravity and water absorption of coarse aggregate from four sources were found as 2.63 to 2.71 and 0.73% to 0.88% respectively. Also, the value of different mechanical properties from the lab test were found as: LAAV (21.4% to 28.3%), AIV (10.95% to 15.07) and ACV (14.95% to 20.9%). The average compressive strength of the concrete cube prepared from coarse aggregate for 7 and 28 days were found to be within standard required for all sources. It was also found that there is a significance difference in the mean compressive strength of the concrete made from different coarse aggregate source through one-way ANOVA analysis.
