Abstract

Waste management is a global environmental issue which is a very significant problem in today’s world. There is a considerable amount of disposal of waste without proper segregations which has lead to both economic & environmental sufferings. Geographical Information System (GIS) can be used as a decision support tool for planning waste management. A model is designed for the case study area for the purpose of planning waste management to analyze and simulate various spatial problems. The waste management issues are considered to solve some of the present situation problems like proper allocation & relocation of waste bins, check for unsuitability & proximity convenience due to waste bin to the users, proposal of recyclable waste bins for the required areas & future suggestions. GIS technology is used to improve the efficiency of waste collection & transportation in Kanchipuram Municipality. The findings of results suggested modification to improve efficiency in terms of collection time, travel distance and to reduce the workload to some extent.
