Abstract

In the course of the past decade, the role of the tube joint in the heat exchanger has developed at a rapid pace. This became necessary as temperature and pressure increased for heat exchanger in chemical, petroleum and steam power plants and especially as a more critical need developed in the nuclear energy and automatic power fields. In the fabrication of synthesis gas loop waste heat boiler of ammonia plants, the tube-to-tube sheet welding is a very critical operation. The material used for the construction is 21/4Cr-1Mo/11/4Cr-1/2Mo steel with low level of impurity elements for preventing temper embrittlements. To achieve a crevice-free tube-to-tube sheet joint, Internal Bore Welding is used with 100% radiography. The weld thickness is normally limited to about 4mm and autogenously pulsed arc welding is employed. In this report, the various trials carried out to achieve the final set of parameters and their observations are presented.
